Stdudy Permit

Applications

Generally, foreign nationals must obtain a study permit in order to study in Canada. However, foreign nationals may be exempted from requiring a study permit in the following situations:

  • Family members or private staff accompanying a foreign representative accredited by Global Affairs Canada; or
  • Members of the armed forces of a country or territory designated for the purposes of the Visiting Forces Act.

Educational credential recognition:

Before you can study at a post-secondary school in Canada, you will need to have your existing educational credentials formally recognized. You can contact directly the post-secondary schools you are interested in to find out what kind of education assessment they require and accept.

Each college and university has its own system to assess credentials from your home country. You may need to provide documents or transcripts (translated into English or French) so your Canadian school can assess you.

Costs:

All students must pay tuition fees for post-secondary studies. Tuition fees vary depending on the school and program. Students must also buy course materials such as textbooks and supplies.

They must also pay for:

  • housing
  • food
  • transportation
  • other expenses

Admission requirements:

Each college and vocational school in Canada has its own admission requirements. There is no Canada-wide entrance test for post-secondary study programs. Each institution sets its own admission standards and assesses the qualifications of each applicant individually.

To study at a Canadian college, you must provide proof of your English or French language capabilities, depending on the language you choose for your studies. Some colleges have implemented their own English or French admission test.

Financial Assistance:

Individuals who need help to finance their Canadian studies may, as a first step, contact the government of their country of citizenship. There may be scholarships, low-interest loans, or other awards you qualify for. In addition, the financial aid office of the university or college you wish to attend may be in a position to offer assistance. Certain institutions may have financing options available to international students.

HOW TO OBTAIN A STUDY PERMIT:

  • Obtain Acceptance into a School Program in Canada
  • After obtaining acceptance into a school program in Canada, a foreign national may apply for a study permit.

If the immigration authorities are satisfied that the applicant meets all requirements, they will issue a Study Permit with a validity period that is the same as the duration of the study program, typically between one and four years.

Working in Canada while Studying:

Those foreign nationals who hold a study permit may work full-time in Canada while studying. This will allow the student to supplement the cost of their studies in Canada, and gain useful work experience. However, this work experience will not be considered for purposes of applying to other immigration programs available.

Post-Graduate Work Permits:

Work permits issued under the Post-Graduation Work Permit Program allow international students who have graduated from a participating Canadian post-secondary institution to gain valuable Canadian work experience. Students may work in Canada for up to three years after graduation.

The application for the work permit must be filed within 180 days after your school issues your final marks.

Applying for Permanent Residence:

Foreign nationals who complete their studies in Canada, then obtain a Post-Graduate Work Permit and get at least one year of skilled work experience, can then apply for permanent residence in Canada under the Express Entry.
